How to enable tap to click on the Magic Mouse

macOS has a “Tap to click” switch for the trackpad, but not for the Magic Mouse. Here is how to get tap to click on any Magic Mouse in a minute, for free.

Why there is no tap to click for the Magic Mouse

In System Settings → Mouse you will find tracking speed, scrolling direction and gestures, but no “Tap to click”. That option only exists under Trackpad. The Magic Mouse has the same kind of multitouch surface, macOS simply does not offer the setting for it.

Turn it on with Tap2Click

  1. Download Tap2Click (free, 0.4 MB) from the download page or run brew install tourist-apps/tap/tap2click.
  2. Open it. An icon appears in the menu bar.
  3. Allow it once in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  4. Touch the mouse lightly: that is a click. Two fingers: right-click. Two quick taps: double-click.

Will it break scrolling or gestures?

No. Tap2Click only reacts to a short touch that does not move. Scrolling, swipes, Mission Control gestures and normal physical clicks keep working exactly as before.

Tuning

If you get a stray click when grabbing the mouse, pick “Fast” under Tap Speed in the menu. If taps are missed, pick “Relaxed”.
